Tanning of Animal Skins and Furs
The Ancient Art of Tanning
Tanning of animal skins and furs is a practice dating back thousands of years. Our distant ancestors used them to make clothing, shoes, tents, bags, etc.
The tanning process is designed to give suppleness to the skin and, in the case of a fur, prevent hair from falling. After any trace of fat or meat is removed from the animal’s skin, the skin is then skived. It is then immersed in a pre-tanning solution and then tanned. Once dried, it is oiled to feed the leather to maintain its suppleness.
